On and off the road

Maloja Pushbikers now also a professional team in the Mountain Bike World Cup

It was a special moment for the two team managers Christian Grasmann and Matthias Beck when the final closing of ranks took place in February of this year. In the end, there were two winners: Christian Grasmann’s Maloja Pushbikers will be joined by a professional team that is among the best in the world in the Mountain Bike World Cup. Matthias Beck and his team, which started last year as the „Superior XC Team“, will find a new home including professional infrastructure in the surroundings of the Pushbikers. Under the name Maloja Pushbikers we now create a symbiosis of the UCI Continental Road Team, the MTB Elite Team, a women’s Bundesliga Èquipe and one of the best German junior clubs.

„A concept that is unique in the cycling world and that feels right for both sides in terms of sport, economy and emotion“, says Pushbikers founder Christian Grasmann. The next step is to further professionalize the Pushbikers‘ concept and at the same time to broaden it. Same goals, key values and visual language for road, track and mountain bike. Despite all the professionalism, team spirit and the joy of sport are also high on the list of priorities – on the bike, in nature and in everyday life. Maloja founder Klaus Haas is full of praise for the alliance: „This somewhat different form of professional sport suits us very well and we are delighted to have these two professional cycling teams, which we have been supporting for years, under one roof now“.

With two Swiss, two Germans and two Czech riders, the Maloja Pushbikers MTB Team enters the 2020 season, with Linda Indergand, who is already starting her fifth year for the team, leading the way. In the past, she has achieved the greatest successes for the team from the region Allgäu, became Olympic eighth in Rio 2016 and two-time sprint world champion. Fabian Giger, the Vice-European Champion of 2014, returned to the team last year. He already competed for the SKS MiG Team 10 years ago, became among others U23 European Champion and is this year with his experience a calm pole for the other athletes. Martin Gluth and Felicitas Geiger, German U23 Champion 2017, complete the team as well as Karla Stepanova, two times Czech Cross Country Champion, and Jan Vastl.

Similar to the history of the Maloja Pushbikers on road and track, the MTB Team has come a long way from the junior team to a UCI Elite Team. In 2008 the SKS MiG Team (MiG stands for Made in Germany) was founded and supported by German bike- and parts manufacturers. The basic idea was to bring young athletes closer to the MTB Cross Country sport and to offer a wide range of bike- and nature experiences.

Maloja Pushbikers MTB Hauptquartier mit Alpsee Bikes Shop in Immenstadt

In accordance with the new surroundings, Maloja Pushbikers MTB moved into new headquarters im Engelfeld in Immenstadt/ Allgäu two months ago. A former car showroom was rebuilt in Maloja Pushbikers – Style. Surrounded by the professional bike shop „Alpsee Bikes“ with a freely visible workshop, all aspects of the organization come together here and allow interested people to take a look behind the scenes of an international MTB pro team.

The year 2020 will be a year of transition for Maloja Pushbikers MTB in a double sense. On the one hand, Corona influenced the World Cup race calendar to be postponed to the autumn and on the other hand, although they will be riding in the same jersey, the infrastructure and the pool of sponsors in particular are not unified yet. This process should be completed by the end of next year at the latest.

After a long preparation in spring, the pros are eager to fight for World Cup podiums again in the second half of the year. They are currently training hard in order to be in top form for the races in Les Gets, Lenzerheide and Nove Mesto, which are scheduled to start in September, as well as for the World- and European Championships in October. The time will be used to give more priority to mental training as well as physical training. The mental side needs a lot of preparation and practice, time which the pushbikers rarely find when their racing calendar is full. In the mid-term the goal is clearly defined for the two team leaders Matthias Beck and Fabian Haug: „We want to win World Cup races and have a solid place among the top ten teams in the UCI Team Ranking“.

Main Sponsor: Superior

The SUPERIOR brand was born in 1993, as a response to a need of a decent, light and modern mountain bike. Giving a name “SUPERIOR” to your brand – something better than others, ahead of the competition and designed to win – you must have strong arguments behind. We never thought we could make a mountain bike we would not be proud of, each of them was meant to be ridden by one of us, or our friends. You definitely don’t want to disappoint yourself, you want to be better, be faster and stay stronger. You need to think ahead and stay aware. With a clear vision in our minds, we always knew, what SUPERIOR bicycles should look like. As one of the first brands in Europe, in 2003, we adopted 29-inch wheels as a standard for XC bikes. This means you have to redesign not only your entire collection but also the way you think of riding a mountain bike and riding it fast. Superior was always prepared for such rapid changes in direction, and so were its bicycles.
